🎬 DiscoverThe drive from Ananuri continues north through the Aragvi gorge. Mountains tower on both sides. The road twists upward toward the Jvari Pass. It's a long drive. Grandfather pulls out a folded newspaper and proposes a game.

Grandfather:

გრძელი გზაა. თამაშობა გინდათ? სიტყვების თამაში!

grdzeli gzaa. tamashoba gindat? sit'q'vebis tamashi!

"It's a long road. Want to play? A word game!"

Nino:

კი! რა თამაში?

k'i! ra tamashi?

"Yes! What game?"

Grandfather:

ერთი ფესვი — "კითხ". ახლა: წა-კითხვა რას ნიშნავს?

erti pesvi — "k'ithkh". akhla: ts'a-k'itkhva ras nishanavs?

"One root — "kithkh". Now: what does ts'a-k'itkhva mean?"

Nino:

წაკითხვა? კითხვა... წაკითხვა... წიგნს წავიკითხავ! — "წაკითხვა" ნიშნავს "კითხვას" — to read!

ts'ak'itkhva? k'itkhva... ts'ak'itkhva... ts'ignis ts'avik'itkhav! — "ts'ak'itkhva" nishnavs "k'itkhvas" — to read!

"Ts'ak'itkhva? K'itkhva... ts'ak'itkhva... I'll read a book! — "ts'ak'itkhva" means "reading" — to read!"

Grandfather:

ბრავო! ახლა: იგივე ფესვი "კითხ" — მაგრამ შე-კითხვა?

bravo! akhla: igive pesvi "k'ithkh" — magram she-k'itkhva?

"Bravo! Now: the same root "kithkh" — but she-k'itkhva?"

Nino (surprised):

შეკითხვა? ეს არის... "შეკითხვა"! — to ask! იგივე ფესვი, სხვა სიტყვა?!

shek'itkhva? es aris... "shek'itkhva"! — to ask! igive pesvi, skhva sit'q'va?!

"Shek'itkhva? That's... "a question"! — to ask! The same root, a different word?!"

Grandfather:

და-კითხვა — "დაკითხვა" — to interrogate! მო-კითხვა — "მოკითხვა" — to send regards! ხუთი სიტყვა ერთი ფესვიდან!

da-k'itkhva — "dak'itkhva" — to interrogate! mo-k'itkhva — "mok'itkhva" — to send regards! khuti sit'q'va erti pesvidan!

"Da-k'itkhva — to interrogate! Mo-k'itkhva — to send regards! Five words from one root!"

💡Grandfather just revealed something remarkable: the root კითხ (kithkh) creates FIVE completely different verbs depending on which preverb you attach. წა-კითხვა = to read, შე-კითხვა = to ask, და-კითხვა = to interrogate, გამო-კითხვა = to examine, მო-კითხვა = to send regards. Same root, five unrelated meanings. English needs five different words from five different languages. Georgian builds them all from one root.
